Why Is SEO So Important?

Yes! It is how people find you on Google.

Search Engine Optimisation or SEO for short is the art of getting your business to high ranking positions on Google for terms people are searching. This position is called “organic rank”. It is important that your website is optimised for Google because it is the most used search engine on the planet. In Australia Google has a 95% market share and is so popular that the most searched phrase on Bing is “download Google Chrome” or a similar phrase. Ranking high on Google is difficult though and takes a lot of time. This is why agencies dedicated just to SEO exists.

The Importance of Keyword Research

It is vital that you do keyword research for your industry or market to find what people are searching. Trying to target the phrase “aged care” for instance is absolutely pointless because it is such a diverse industry and has so many different sectors. You should find keyphrases that are relevant to your niche. For instance in our case we are targeting “aged care marketing agencies”. This is because there are only a few agencies competing for this phrase and we know we can be competitive.

As we are a newer agency however, we are going further and targeting keyphrases like “aged care marketing agencies queensland”. Obviously there will be a lot less searches that are that specific, but should there be there is a higher chance we will be number one and get that client onboard. So what keywords or phrases are being searched for your industry and how can you find out?

  • Use Google Ads Keyword Research Tools

  • Use Alternate Keyword Research Tools

  • Jump on Google and start researching phrases for yourself.

  • Use an SEO tool like SEMRush. these tools allow you to do competitor analysis and keyword planning.

What Is Googles Algorithm?

So, how do i optimise my website to rank on Google? This is the golden question and the answer is quite simple but the execution is complicated. Googles algorithm changes all the time, but has updates every 6 – 12 months. The last major update however was FRED which was released around 5 years ago. FRED placed your content as the most important, as well as how it is structured so having blogs, videos and images relevant to your topic helped you rank higher. The latest major update however is BERT which was released in December. This update doesn’t change much in terms of the content importance, but it introduces AI to Googles search results and places importance on keywords used instead of exact phrases.

It also introduces Google Snippets which are the little drop downs you will have noticed that allow you to quickly see answers to relevant questions. These snippets are chosen by Googles AI system, which tries to show you the most relevant information.

How Do I Create SEO Optimised Content?

If Google places importance on content what content should I create? Google loves content that gives people answers, or helps them solve a problem. If you can write blogs and create videos that help people solve a problem in your industry you will see your rank rise quite quickly. It is important to note that SEO in most cases is not instant, it can take weeks or months to see results. This is because you have to build website structure, update sitemaps, create backlinks and external links etc… Here is a quick example of a good page setup for a blog for “top 5 SEO tools”

Page Title (H1)

Video (YouTube) – A video you created or someone else has about your top 5 picks

Section Title (H2) – Example: “Why you should use SEO tools”
Text (Paragraph) – Explanation as to why you should
Image – an image relevant to the section it is in (with correct meta data setup)

Section Title (H2) – Example: “Our Top 5 Recommendations”
Text (Paragraph) – Details on why you have chosen these 5
First Choice (H3) – Text (Paragraph)
Pros(H4) – Text
Cons(H4) – Text
Second Choice (H3) – Text (Paragraph)

It is very important that you link each of your choices to their associated website. People often fear that it will take people away from their article, but these external links are really important for your SEO. Don’t be afraid to give people answers to things you do either. For example a blog about Google Ads that shows how to create an ad. You may have 20% of your audience follow it step by step and do everything themselves, but the vast majority of people will get someone to do it for them and you have just demonstrated you know what you are doing, so it is likely they will come to you.

What Is Off-Page SEO?

When most people think of SEO, they think about their website directly, but SEO is far more complex than just your website. Another way to get your website ranking is to make Google realise it is being mentioned around the internet. You used to be able to just add your business to business listings for a better rank, but Google has now limited this and only certain listings will help you rank. The best way to do this now is to send people to articles from your website that are relevant to what they are asking about. For example if you are in a forum and someone mentions they are looking for advice on SEO or a specific section of SEO you could link them to your articles about SEO in general or that specific section.

Be careful with this though! If you were to just go through the internet randomly adding your website to lots of different questions and they have no relevance (just trying to trick the algorithm) you can be flagged for spamming. If this happens you are basically scrubbed from the internet and it is almost impossible to have this removed. Other good examples of this are adding videos you have made to YouTube and putting your page link in the videos description, adding links to your social media accounts and creating a Google Business listing that links to your site.

Don’t Expect Miracles!

Getting your page to number one on Google takes a lot of time! You won’t get there in a day, a week or even a month. It could take months of you creating good content to start ranking in high positions, especially in heavily competitive industries. Don’t be disheartened though, as the long run pay off is well and truly worth it. If you follow the instruction mentioned you are guaranteed to be ranking higher in a few months.
