Quoting a Website?

First and foremost we need to establish what the goal of your website is. How many pages will it have? How many items in your store? How much SEO time is needed? Whether we have to develop plugins to complete a task, do we need to design it for you or are we using a template? There are lots of questions that need to be answered, but this article aims to give you a general idea of how much a website will cost to have built in Australia. Outsourcing overseas is always an option to keep costs down, but it comes with huge risks! Data breaches, inflated hours, work held for ransom etc… We always recommend you use a local developer or try and do it yourself before outsourcing overseas.

Why Use Australian Developers?

Aside from the dangers of outsourcing overseas mentioned above, in Australia you have rights that allow you to take companies to court if they don’t deliver what was promised. Australian developers are usually better educated and have experience with Australian markets, but also and this is the best part, there is no language barrier! Most good Australian developers also use Australian hosting providers or have their own server setup, so if you are in an industry like ours (aged care) your data is being held in Australia which is a government requirement. This requirement is mainly to stop people trying to build a website themselves and accidently leaking client information and credit card details etc… Using an Australian developer offers you protection from all these variables. Make sure you ask the companies you approach if their teams are in Australia or overseas, as lots of Australian companies will use overseas developers as well to keep costs down. It is worth noting, we do not. Our entire team is based on the Gold Coast, Queensland.

Quick Cost Guide

All agencies in Australia will have different pricing, but this is based on our knowledge of the industry and is similar to what we charge. For a more exact figure you will have to get quotes from multiple agencies in different areas of Australia. Obviously going to a city like Sydney or Melbourne for a developer will be more expensive than in Brisbane or Adelaide because of the overheads. A developer in Sydney gets paid more than a developer in Brisbane, so their prices usually reflect this.

Basic 1 Page Templated Website

If you already have all your content written, images and videos ready and a server setup it will be cheaper because all the developer has to do is slot your information into a template and make sure everything is connected and optimised for SEO. With a good agency you will get correct page structure, image compression, page speed testing and basic SEO. Costs vary, but are around;

  • With content supplied and server environment already setup – $500 + GST

  • Without content supplied and no server environment already setup – $700-$900 + GST depending on how much written text is needed.

  • Simple e-commerce store with content supplied and server environment already setup – $900-$1.400 + GST depending on how much written text is needed and how many products need to be uploaded.

  • Simple e-commerce store without content supplied and no server environment already setup – $1.500-$2.000 + GST depending on how much written text is needed and how many products need to be uploaded.

Basic 3 Page Templated Website

A 3 page website usually consists of a landing page (homepage), about page or services page and contact page but will vary based on whether it a shop and what content you have supplied. You usually get to choose from multiple website templates that will help you understand what is needed content wise to keep costs down.

  • With content supplied and server environment already setup – $1,500 + GST

  • Without content supplied and no server environment already setup – $1,700-$2,200 + GST depending on how much written text is needed.

  • Simple e-commerce store with content supplied and server environment already setup – $2,200-$2,500 + GST depending on how much written text is needed and how many products need to be uploaded.

  • Simple e-commerce store without content supplied and no server environment already setup – $2,700-$3,300 + GST depending on how much written text is needed and how many products need to be uploaded.

Basic 5 Page Templated Website

A 5 page website usually consists of a landing page, services page, shop page, about page and account page plus a contact page. This will vary based on number of products, services, content received and if complex forms are needed.

  • With content supplied and server environment already setup – $2,500 + GST

  • Without content supplied and no server environment already setup – $2,700-$3,200 + GST depending on how much written text is needed.

  • Simple e-commerce store with content supplied and server environment already setup – $3,200-$3,500 + GST depending on how much written text is needed and how many products need to be uploaded.

  • Simple e-commerce store without content supplied and no server environment already setup – $3,700-$4,300 + GST depending on how much written text is needed and how many products need to be uploaded.

Customised Web Solution – No E-Commerce

A customised solution is a website build from scratch to achieve your goals. These goals could be more site visitors, more sales, more downloads, more surveys complete etc… The agency will sit with you and find out exactly what it is your website needs to do and cost up the design and build for you. It is very hard to give you an accurate cost for this as this option has almost unlimited variables, but based on what we would charge.

A customised basic information based website with approximately 5 pages for a small business that is looking to increase web traffic and enquiries would start around the $4,500 mark and can go up to $7,000 depending on whether complex forms are needed, plugin need to be developed, API’s need to be connected and whether server setup and hosting is needed.

A complex 5 page website with client profiles, accounts, surveys, forms, plugins, API’s, animations, videos, Advanced SEO etc… would start at $5,500 and can go up to around the $10,000-$15,000 range. This will all depend on the variables like design, amount of content to be optimised, how complex the API connections are and how complex the plugins being developed are.

An extremely complex website or “Web APP” that is entirely coded and most of the time one of a kind (websites like caresales.com.au, realestate.com.au, villages.com.au etc…) can be very expensive depending on the time needed to prepare the website flow, API connections, design, number of developers, timeframe, complexities etc… These website usually range between $30,000 – $50,000 but can get to the $100,000 + range if they are really large.

These really complex sites are expensive because there is a huge amount of planning that goes in to them from how databases communicate, to how users flow through the site and down to how many clicks it takes for a conversion.  The development time is often as long as the planning phase because if you hand a developer a project with no plans, they will do it how they think is right and the vast majority of the time, they have no background in UI/UX design (User Experience and Interface) and this means the project ends up jumbled and messy. Really good agencies have teams for each section designers, developers, project manager, SEO and SEM specialists, as well as full stack developers that configure the servers.

Customised E-Commerce Web Solution

An e-commerce website is a website that you sell products on. These days there are hundreds of e-commerce solutions available from the likes of Shopify, BigCommerce and BigCartel. These are solutions like DIY website builders where you upload your products and create a website around them. You also have the likes of WooCommerce for WordPress and other solutions like Magento and Magento 2 which are basically e-commerce specific CMS platforms. For people looking to do this themselves without help, the first options are the most popular. BigCommerce is better suited to dropshipping companies, where as Shopify is better for small businesses, however, if you are looking for an option with almost unlimited potential WooCommerce and Magento are the better options, but they are for more experienced web developers. Anyone who has tried to build an e-commerce website from scratch will tell you how incredibly complicated it can be and the number of problems they faced along the way. We HIGHLY recommend you get a specialist to develop you an ecommerce solution because doing it yourself will usually hinder the website rather than help it.

A basic e-commerce solution like Shopify is a set monthly fee with extra costs for additional tools for marketing, branding etc… These solutions are quite limited for advanced SEO techniques and you’ll face the same issues people do when using a DIY website builder like WIX or SquareSpace, they are however cheap and will cost you around $500 for a year and completion if you do it all yourself.

A more complex solution like WordPress with WooCommerce is a little bit more expensive, but the beauty of using this combination is you have a huge number of plugins available that allow you to create really complex shops quite easily. A customised WordPress + WooCommerce solution will cost you anywhere from $3,000 – $10,000 depending on the number of products, time needed for SEO and whether plugins need to be developed or brought. We have seen websites with this combination cost up to the $50,000 mark because of the sheer number of products that needed to be optimised and the time spend designing the website.

A more complex site built for really large companies that uses Magento, BigCommerce or in some cases WordPress + WooCommerce will cost you around $15,000 – $20,000. That is a starting price, if you need customised API connections, plugins built, specialised carts and account setups as well as complex support networks and email marketing you would be looking at around the $40,000 to $70,000 mark. This is simply because of the sheer amount of work and complexity involved in creating a something of this calibre as well as the server space and technology needed to make sure its fast and can handle the traffic coming through. A basic cPanel setup is unlikely to be able to handle a website of this solution and customised Virtual Private Servers or entire servers will be needed to run it. When you get to this level you have to start looking at security and storage too which adds on.

An absolutely customised solution “Web App” that is built from scratch, or a website that is essentially another Shopify will cost you anything from $80,00 – $200,000+ and you should expect a development and testing period of around 12-24 months. This will include server setup, security, design, development and support networks. These projects are suited to larger agencies with top end teams that can code and handle server setup and maintenance. These SHOULD NOT be outsourced as it is likely your IP will be stolen or they will hold it for ransom. It simply is not worth the risk.
